  • To ensure optimal growth and development by encouraging and promoting self-management of diabetes.
  • To support the patient/client and their carers to adopt dietary practice to help avoid long-term diabetes complications.

The Target Group will:

  • Understand that dietary choices and food are important in managing diabetes and long-term health.
  • Understand how CHO affects blood glucose levels.
  • Know that insulin in required to regulate blood glucose and energy.
  • Know how to calculate and adjust insulin (bolus and basal) for meals, snacks and activities based on variable factors including:
    - GI (fat, sugar, fibre, protein content)
    - Time and duration of meals/eating
    - Stress/excitement, energy expenditure
  • Understand the importance of monitoring and keeping a diary to record BG, insulin, CHO etc.
