MAPN & #MalnutritionMonday 2023

The Malnutrition Awareness and Prevention Network (MAPN) is a forum that brings together organisations and individuals with interests in older people, food & communities to share good practice and combine efforts to influence awareness and action on malnutrition.

Formed in 2018, the network meets quarterly to exchange ideas, resources and research to drive change and improvement for older people living in the UK.

#MalnutritionMonday

#MalnutritionMonday is a monthly Twitter activity, held on the last Monday of the month. Established by MAPN, it aims to raise awareness of the risks of malnutrition amongst older people, and provide ideas and tips to support those who may be at risk.

NDR-UK are a member of MAPN and last week, we led April's #MalnutritionMonday campaign (24/04/23). Here's a summary from the day...

  • It is important to have a diet that is as varied and nourishing as possible to help support your immune function, strength, independence and quality of life. If you are eating less or have lost weight without planning to, simple changes can make a big difference. Our recipe book, Nourish, has lots of ideas - we've shared the recipes for a delicious Fruit Punch Shake, Pasta Carbonara and a No Fuss Bread and Butter Pudding here.

  • Skimmed milk powder is easy to use and a quick way to way boost your protein and energy intake. You can also buy it in many supermarkets.

    ·       Mix 4 tablespoons skimmed milk powder with 600ml/1 pint milk.

    Store in the fridge for use throughout the day in drinks, soup, sauces, cereals and puddings. 

  • You can use Fortified Milk in milkshakes too! Try some of the ideas below, or view our Nourishing Drinks resource.

  • We’ve developed 2 free to download tables providing ideas to boost your protein and energy intake – why not save to your favourites, or print off and stick to your, your family member or friend’s fridge.

  • Some health conditions can increase your risk of malnutrition. Examples include liver disease, cancer, and dementia. Challenges can occur as people may experience physical factors such as a loss of appetite, taste changes and feeling sick. NDR-UK has a range of resources providing support and guidance. If you’re struggling with a small appetite, or don’t feel like eating, here are some ideas to try:

  • We are working in partnership with the BDA Gastroenterology Specialist Group and the BDA Oncology Specialist Group to review their Oncology and Liver Disease ranges.
