#MalnutritionMonday November Campaign

Published: 25.11.19

NDR-UK is part of a network of organisations that co-ordinate the #MalnutritionMonday Twitter campaign, which takes place on the last Monday of each month to help raise awareness of the issue of malnutrition. This month, NDR-UK is the lead organisation and we wanted to highlight the range of situations in which malnutrition can occur and opportunities for NDR-UK to provide support through our resources and our development and review processes. We have been tweeting throughout the day @NDR_UK and you can catch up on the activity by searching for the #MalnutritionMonday hashtag.

Here are a few highlights to get you started (or a brief summary for those of you not on Twitter!).

Key Messages
Older People Focus for Malnutrition

To start our #MalnutritionMonday we wanted to highlight the value of a #FoodFirst approach for older people, focusing on #nourishing recipes like the recipe book we developed with #dietitians @HSC_PSRD and tested with some willing participants @Age_NI! https://www.ndr-uk.org/news/a-flourishing-partnership-for-nourishing-care

Illness Side Effects Driving Malnutrition Risk

Other groups may be at risk of #malnutrition, due to illness or associated treatment. A nourishing diet may support enhanced quality of life, as our #Oncology Range supports for people with cancer https://www.ndr-uk.org/browse/c-Oncology-Palliative-Care-25/ #MalnutritionMonday

Acute Areas Requiring Specialist Assessment

Specialist dietetic assessment is essential in acute areas such as #renal disease and may drive particular dietary requirements. @NDR_UK provides specialised resources for patients in acute areas, developed with experienced #dietitians https://www.ndr-uk.org/browse/c-Renal-Disease-29/ #MalnutritionMonday

Working in Partnership

We hope we provided some value and food for thought over the course of the day, and we were delighted to start generating insights from our network like the ones below. The conversation doesn't end here though so please pick up the threads at #MalnutritionMonday and join us on the 16th December for a special collaborative Christmas edition!

  • Kathryn Duff talking about Nourish - "What a difference this resource has made to optimising nutritional care! Huge positive changes have been seen within care and nursing home in relation to improving nutritional standards for so many suffering from poor appetite and weight loss!"
  • "Food First offers @RealisticMed if it is co-produced and person - centred. Lots of benefits for health, wellbeing, engagement, reducing clinical appointments and prescribing efficiencies- food not medicines please" - Evelyn Newman on the importance of the food first approach.
