Undernutrition/frailty Range

Published: 20.09.22

In Spring 2021, we began exploring needs and gathering feedback about how best we can support dietitians, health professionals and their patient groups to combat malnutrition. Following these discussions, we recruited a project group of specialist dietitians to review and fully update our undernutrition/frailty range. This also included a full redesign.

The resources promote a food first approach through different stages of care and recovery, and are frequently used upon discharge from hospital, recovery, rehabilitation, and progression away from ONS in community settings.

Eating Better Feeling Better (ref. 9310) aims to support people who have a poor appetite or have lost weight to meet their nutritional needs by providing food first information to increase energy and protein intake.

The target group will:

  • understand the importance of increasing their nutritional and fluid intake
  • know how to apply the dietary advice (including how to increase the nutritional content of meals and snacks).

The project group have also developed the following tables highlighting how to easily boost energy and protein intake by adding extras to meals and snacks. They are free to download for health professionals and their patients and can be accessed here:

Eat Well Heal Well (ref. 9312) provides first line dietary advice to carers of, or people with or at risk of developing pressure injuries, to help them understand the need to increase their nutritional and fluid intake and apply the dietary advice.

The target group will:

  • understand how to increase their protein intake (and energy, if applicable) to ensure nutritional adequacy and promote wound healing.
  • understand and know how to manage key factors that affect wound healing, including dehydration, inadequate energy and protein intake, an unbalanced diet with poor sources of vitamins and minerals.

Nourishing Snacks and Drinks (ref. 9229) (previously Light Meals and Snacks) aims to support weight gain or weight maintenance for people who are aiming to stop or reduce their use of oral nutritional supplements.

Now an A5 resource providing savoury and sweet snack options (minimum 300kcal and 3g protein) and nourishing drinks ideas (minimum 300kcal and 10-15g protein).

The target group will:

  • be able to choose individual or combinations of foods/drinks which give an equivalent amount of energy and protein to a prescribed supplement.
  • know where to get further help and advice.
