Weight Loss You Can See for a Kidney Diet
A kidney diet picture portion guide for a calorie-controlled dietary plan.
Developed in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, this resource provides a simple portion approach to support weight management for people living with kidney disease. With guidance to achieve a low potassium and phosphate intake, the plan should be personalised by a specialist dietitian to meet individual weight loss goals.
This resource does not address co-morbidities explicitly, but is mindful of them to ensure that the guidance is as widely applicable as possible.
Always refer to the professional guidelines to provide appropriate energy defecit targets, ensure nutrient balance and comply with relevant dietary restrictions for individual needs.
Advice is complex, condition specific and requires a Dietitian with knowledge, skills and experience in the condition.
The resource aims to:
-
make following an energy deficit diet easier by providing pictures of portioned food and meal
-
allow flexibility of choice of foods within an energy-deficit diet within potassium, phosphate, fluid and other dietary restrictions as appropriate to the individual patient.
The Target Group will understand:
- that balanced portion sizes will help them to lose and/or control body weight
-
how many portions of food from each food group they should have to achieve and/or maintain their target weight
-
how portions combine within a plated meal, in turn through daily intake
-
how to read labels to support their calorie-controlled diet and related dietary considerations.
