Bolus and ICR
A simple guide on the actions of bolus insulin and its role in diabetes management, including guidance on checking and adjusting Insulin to Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR) to achieve blood glucose target levels.
Endorsed by the British Dietetic Association.
Advice requires detailed explanation from a Dietitian or other specialist Health Professional with appropriate nutritional knowledge, to enable correct understanding and implementation.
To provide people with Type 1 diabetes knowledge and understanding of bolus insulin to manage their diabetes, ensuring quality of life and improved diabetes control. To support people to check and adjust their Insulin to Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR) to achieve target blood glucose levels.
The Target Group will know:
- that bolus insulin ‘covers’ carbohydrate consumed through food and drink
- how to calculate bolus insulin and how to use bolus calculators (e.g. table/grid, mobile apps) and bolus advisors
- that ICR can vary throughout the day
- how to identify patterns in their blood glucose control
- how to complete checks on factors that may affect insulin absorption
- how to plan and apply systematic adjustments to ICR
- that checking blood glucose levels regularly is crucial to maintain good diabetes management.
